GOAL

Good Health and Well-being

The UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages which includes reduction of maternal and child/neonatal mortality, combating infectious disease, reducing noncommunicable disease, strengthen prevention of substance abuse, improve road traffic and education on sexual and reproductive health and the promotion of universal health coverage and importance of environmental health.

Global Efforts to Eradicate

Global efforts on Sustainable Development Goal 3 stays true to the goals of guaranteeing health and well-being for everyone. This is especially true for the battle against HIV/AIDS and other diseases. The global community, namely United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Health Organizations (WHO), and various governments and private organizations has made a collective effort in making progress in increasing access to antiretroviral medicine. Institutions like UNAIDS and the Global Fund focuses on lowering HIV-related deaths and improving quality of life for those who are infected (UNAIDS, 2023). Efforts have also been made to address the needs of important groups such as drug users, sex workers, and LGBTQ+ people who frequently suffer from stigma and consequently impediments to care, as well as to integrate HIV responses with larger health systems (UNDP, 2024).

The said efforts have given light to the importance of legal and policy frameworks and many nation’s governments have changed legal systems to protect the marginalized groups and to fight the prejudice and stigma associated with the diseases (UNDP, 2024).

In the 2024 report from UNDP, it highlighted the maintenance and successful expansion of HIV services that were made possible by sustainable funding methods and capacity-building programs. Furthermore, advances in the other Sustainable Development Goals such as climate change adaptation were coupled with the inclusion of HIV and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in health policies which demonstrated a comprehensive approach to health that considers social and environmental determinants.

Even still, there are still issues to be resolved in both the global and local efforts on HIV/AIDS awareness, such as resource shortages, health disparities, and the requirement for ongoing international cooperation. To achieve universal health coverage and advance SDG 3, which aims to improve everyone's health and well-being regardless of circumstances, it will be imperative to address these concerns (WHO, 2023).
